CHOICE Review

A plethora of books on leadership crowds bookshelves these days. To this reader, they all have the same content. All push some form of transformational leadership. The only question is in what context the reader wants to see these new ideas applied. For education, turn to Thomas Sergiovami's Value Added Leadership (CH, Nov'90); for manufacturing, turn to Max DePree's Leadership Is an Art (1987); for Adult Continuing Education (ACE), turn to Apps' book. In it, he describes how the world of ACE has changed, how views on leadership have changed, and how ACE leaders must change. The value of the book to those in ACE is Apps's length of experience in ACE and his ability to describe changes that are taking place within the field. His book emphasizes something that few others do: ACE leaders themselves; he offers close examinations of their personal beliefs and values about knowledge, people, and ethics in order to develop a personal philosophy of leadership. He walks readers through the details of creating a personal philosophy statement. The former chair of the department of continuing and vocational education at the University of Wisconsin, Apps commands respect in the ACE world. ACE directors should read his book; others who have read any five books on leadership in the past two years may wish to pass on this one. Faculty; professional. G. L. Findlen; Western Wisconsin Technical College
