It is important for those who will lead higher education into the next century to understand the forces currently transforming universities worldwide. In Transforming Higher Education, many of these influences are identified by contributors from around thew world, including demands for greater access to higher education, funding problems, the conflicting requirements of various constituencies, and the pressure to contribute to a country's economic and social development. The various forms of leadership currently in place at higher education institutions around the world are described, as well as the tasks that all higher education leaders share.
Includes bibliographical references and index.

CHOICE Review
The authors in Green's collection examine the process of change in institutions of higher education throughout the world. The introductory chapters provide an admirable exercise in comparative education: first, an examination of tasks and issues that transcend national boundaries (access, funding, accountability, technology, and internationalization); and next, an examination of the power of and constraints on institutional leaders, whether they be US-style academic CEO's, elected rectors, or ministry appointees. Thereafter, a series of chapters on higher education in Asia, Latin America, Africa, and Western Europe reinforce the importance of regional issues. The body of the volume, however, consists of studies by current and former heads of institutions of higher education, who focus on their own countries. Of particular interest in these reports from the battlefields are discussions that reflect cultural context: the difficulty of eliminating the inequities of apartheid in South Africa, the legacy of communism in the Czech Republic, the relationship between higher education and economic development in Japan, the relationship between higher education and politics in Mexico, the "short track" in France as a response to increased demand, the transformation of polytechnics in England, diversity of institutions in the US. Administrators as well as researchers will learn much from this provocative study. E. S. Swing; Saint Joseph's UniversityNotas de autor provistas por Syndetics
