CHOICE Review

Tackling two challenging subjects--managing innovation and the humans responsible for it--Katz (Northeastern Univ.) has assembled an intriguing and comprehensive collection of articles for use in a variety of forums. Chapters cover the gamut from management of individuals to entire organizations and address issues such as women in technical fields, dual-career ladders for technical professionals, end users, matrixed organizational management challenges, and measuring effectiveness of creativity. Contributors are highly respected academics and practitioners, and many names are well known in the fields of management theory and innovation. Research methodologies include both scientific and empirical, and the graphics are well done. Each article has a useful bibliography, and the topical index is helpful. All author provide analysis of and thoughtful insights into topics that are current and questioned daily by managers in every type of industry and venue. Top executives advocate for employee innovation in their organizations, yet often fail to recognize the costs associated with it, or the environment of reward and recognition that truly fosters such an environment. Useful supplemental reading for upper-division undergraduate or graduate management or MIS students, or for practitioners who would like to do a better job of fostering a climate of creativity. While not every article would be of interest to every reader, there is enough variety to stimulate good discussions and encourage further research. N. J. Johnson; Metropolitan State University
