Resumen: Louis I. Kahn (1901-74) was one of the single greatest influences on world architecture in the second half of the twentieth century. This book provides a comprehensive critical overview of Kahn's architecture, examining his works chronologically and exploring key themes and their evolution throughout his career. Including both built and unbuilt projects, each of the architect's major buildings is analysed, beginning with the design process and ordering ideas, followed by the methods and materials of construction, and finally a 'walk-through' of the spaces themselves - recognizing that Kahn's primary concern was interior space and its experience. Each project is extensively illustrated with photographs that convey the spirit of Kahn's work and a concept development portfolio documents the inspirations and ideas that led to the finished design." "Robert McCarter's authoritative text explores how Louis I. Kahn redefined modern architecture. Featuring a selection of original drawings and photographs from the Louis I. Kahn Archives and newly redrawn plans, this book also includes selected writings by Kahn and the first publication of the complete chronology of Kahn's buildings and projects, compiled by William Whitaker, Chief Curator of the Louis I. Kahn Archives. This monograph is an indispensable reference work on this renowned architect.

Library Journal Review

There is no disputing the publisher's claim that this massive survey by McCarter (architecture, Univ. of Florida) is "the definitive monograph on the American architect's lifework." This is all the Louis Kahn (1901-74) that one could ever need, with 548 black-and-white and color images and a comprehensive list of more than 230 of the architect's projects, at least 30 of them previously unattributed. Though some may find Kahn's work unfriendly-strong on mass, heft, and weight-McCarter gets high marks for his attention to the details of Kahn's life, career, and works. He is thorough, grounded, and not adoring in his respect for his subject. There is also important coverage of computer-generated enhancement to Kahn's unfinished projects, which play perfectly on what might have been to lend sympathetic and visual support toward extending Kahn's list of projects. Recommended for larger or specialized architectural collections.-David Bryant, New Canaan Lib., CT (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. CHOICE Review

This beautiful book represents the best complete critical study to date of Louis Kahn, one of America's and the modern world's three or four greatest architects. McCarter is the author of Frank Lloyd Wright (CH, Apr'98, 35-4287), an equally monumental study of America's and perhaps the world's greatest architect. In fact, these two studies are the monumental bookends of McCarter's long career as a teacher of architecture at the University of Florida in Gainesville. With a romantic vision as big as Goethe's, Kahn reconceptualized modern architecture in the 1960s, making it at once modern and archaic, minimalist and monumental, contemporary and classic. Through the power of his abstract vision, he became the most influential architect in the world after 1960. This book adds more than 30 works to the previous complete list of Kahn's oeuvre, which appeared in David B. Brownlee and David G. De Long's Louis I. Kahn: In the Realm of Architecture (CH, Apr'92, 29-4282). The book is ably researched, copiously footnoted, beautifully illustrated, and stunningly produced, but it does lack a bibliography. ^BSumming Up: Highly recommended.
