Booklist Review

One of six titles in the Curriculum Connections: Psychology series (others include Cognitive Development and The Individual and Society), this dry but systematic survey maps the nebulous field of abnormal human behaviors and their causes, physical and less identifiable. After a discussion of how abnormal is a subjective term (cogently exemplified by the spectrum of supposed gender identity disorders), the book presents a catalog and brief description of dozens of mental disorders, including severe phobias, PTSD, clinical depression, schizophrenia, dementia, autism, and others, and follows that with a tally of a range of physical and psychological therapeutic strategies. Evolving historical views of how madness was identified and treated in the past also get quick coverage. Scanty photos and case studies add little beyond atmosphere, but the margins of every page feature helpful pointers on how given information applies to curriculum guidelines, and generous lists of upper-level print and web resources facilitate further serious study of the topic.--Peters, John Copyright 2010 Booklist
