Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

Here for the first time in three quarters of a century a series of comparative architectural details is reissued.

Once appearing regularly in professional journals, worthy examples of similar building elements by leading architects were one of the most time-tested and fruitful means of improving the practice of architecture.

Now for the first time ever, a rare and particularly useful series by 2013 Clem Labine award winner Milton Grenfell, one pairing drawn details with photographs of the built details, has been assembled from dozens of journal issues and bound into one volume.

These crisply printed to-scale drawings and companion CD should prove indispensable in the drafting room and vital to the full practice of traditional architecture.

Library Journal Review

This volume compiles 273 historic architectural detail drawings published in Pencil Points in the 1930s. Writer and architect Grenfell's introduction calls for architects to reject the contemporary reliance on plastics, glues, and caulk to correct poorly designed building elements. This compilation was created in the hope that architectural students will study historic construction details and return to an era of fine craftsmanship. Design elements detailed include radiator enclosures, chimneys, closets, doors, wood trusses, stairways, and many others that go into constructing homes and public buildings. Each element here includes a detailed drawing and a monochrome photograph of the finished product. An included DVD-ROM allows the images to be manipulated for new design plans. VERDICT The book offers superb examples of architectural details but provides neither written commentary nor historical context for individual elements. This is not a how-to manual for DIY builders, but it will be a good selection for practicing architects and academic institutions supporting architectural programs. It may also find interest among builders with attention to fine craft and individuals planning new homes or repairing historic ones.-Valerie Nye, Santa Fe Univ. of Art & Design Lib., NM (c) Copyright 2011.
