CHOICE Review

In this exploratory, descriptive study, Vachon focuses on the stress and coping responses of care givers in their personal and work environments in caring for critically and terminally ill clients of all ages. Although the concepts of human culpability and burnout are discussed, the author focuses on concepts of communication and coping, thus lending a therapeutic tone to the work. Aaron Antonovsky's stress theory is invoked, as are other theories of role, social learning, and displacement. Basic knowledge of these theories is assumed. The concepts of the Person-Environment Fit Model of occupational stress prevail throughout the work. The presentation of case studies, and the use of pseudonyms for the subjects discussed, lend a realistic but rambling effect to the work. Liberal documentation includes references to the publications of Robert L. Veninga and Ayala Pines, although their more current works are not incorporated. For lower-division through graduate level students in the health fields.-V.L. Norman, University of North Dakota
