An essential book on modern architecture: one hundred of the most significant houses of the past hundred years.

From the first stirrings of modernity in the early twentieth century to the present, the house has served as a test bed of design experimentation, the place where architects have sought to create new forms and to offer new domestic lifestyles. Alvar Aalto, Buckminster Fuller, Rudolph Schindler, Frank Lloyd Wright, Frank Gehry, Eileen Gray, Charles and Ray Eames, Charles Gwathmey, Carlo Scarpa, Herzog & de Meuron: most great architects of the past hundred years have begun or catalyzed their careers with an iconic house.

The introduction looks at the historical and social motivations behind epoch-making residential architecture, showing in sidebars twenty of the most important early examples. Then eighty houses--sixty of which have been specially photographed--are presented chronologically. The text describes the all-important relationship between architecture and client, the physical context in which the house is set, and the pivotal role the house played in the development of the architect's career and architecture in general.

Concise architect biographies and a list of key buildings accompany each house, while photographs and easy-to-read plans bring the words to life.

Library Journal Review

In this oversized volume, author and magazine writer Bradbury (Mediterranean Modern) and photographer Powers (Tropical Minimal) showcase 100 influential dwellings, choosing experimental and innovative houses that collectively offer an overview of 20th-century architecture, with most houses located in Europe and the United States. The roll call of architects includes many of the big names of the century, and a number of the houses are already famous. Each subject is allotted a brief background, several of Powers's fine color photographs, and a floor plan. The chronological sequence begins with Arts and Crafts manors and ends with a portable prefabricated cube inspired by airline accommodation. While there are nods to organic, vernacular, and sustainable approaches, many of the works register as live-in architectural concepts: glass-walled pavilions or abstract sculptures. Verdict Of particular interest to designers and design students.-David R. Conn, Surrey P.L., B.C. (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. CHOICE Review

In the last century, architects and wealthy clients embraced private residences as remarkable laboratories for new ideas. As expressive architecture, they often synthesized the aspirations of leading architects and movements and appealed to homeowners who desired the most up-to-date or unusual styles. Bradbury (independent scholar) convincingly captures the enormous variety and beauty of top-tier iconic homes in this principally photographic treatment (638 illustrations; 559 in color). Twenty-seven structures are illustrated with a short text in the introduction. The rest receive exposure of up to six pages, including text with history, floor plans, biography of architect and key buildings, and gorgeous photos of exteriors, landscaping, interiors, and details, often on full and double pages. Two-thirds of the homes are in North America or western Europe, with others from Japan, Australia, and Brazil. Victor Horta's Hotel Solvay (1900) begins the survey, which concludes with Horden/Haack & Hopfner's modular prefab micro-compact home (2005). End matter includes a gazetteer of addresses and contact information for homes accessible to the public, a bibliography by architect, and an index by "type" (minimalist, futuristic, sustainable, etc.). This volume is valuable as a stylistic overview for architecture and design students, and for all who appreciate beautiful homes. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower-level undergraduates through graduate students, practitioners, general readers. R. T. Clement Northwestern University
