CHOICE Review

How can one turn flooding into an opportunity for improving and conserving water resources. That is the premise of this book on urban planning under climate change. In these times of frequent severe weather events, the design of buildings and living spaces does have an effect on the climate, and a new, intelligent approach is needed to manage the water resources in communities. Architect Watson (formerly, chair, Yale School of Architecture, environmental design program) and water resources engineer Adams (founder, Meliora Environmental Design) present such an approach in four parts. Part 1 introduces the basic principles of hydrology. The second part explores the connection between water and the natural landscape, including previous ill-designed approaches to deal with excess water as well as more intelligent and "green" designs to deal with inland flooding. The third section presents flood-resistant designs. The last section introduces the concept of resilient design as a proactive approach to sustainably manage water resources under climate change risks. The book includes many diagrams and tables that clarify and illustrate the points that the authors make throughout. Summing Up: Highly recommended. All levels/libraries. E. Gomezdelcampo Bowling Green State University
