Library Journal Review

With Latin America's Left in the ascendancy, controlling a growing number of national and local governments, this timely collection of essays aims to analyze rigorously the present historical moment and to chart possible futures. The book's theme comes from the question posed by Rosa Luxemburg in her famous turn-of-the-past-century pamphlet Reform or Revolution? Luxemburg was solidly for the latter; the comparative inadequacy of complacent half-measures is outlined in these pages as well. The topic is addressed from a variety of Marxist perspectives by ten scholars and policymakers: Bolivia's Hugo Moldiz, Brazil's Valter Pomar, Chile's Esteban Silva, Colombia's Jaime Caycedo, Cuba's Roberto Regalado, Ecuador's German Rodas, Mexico's Beatriz Stolowicz, Nicaragua's Carlos Fonseca (son of the Sandinista founder and hero), Panama's Nils Castro, and Venezuela's Amilcar Figueroa. Their essays amply refute any reductionist notions of the Left in Latin America by reflecting a rich spectrum of diversity of thought. A strong addition to the publisher's excellent catalog of works of progressive political theory, though the book would be that much stronger, as always, if it had an index. Recommended for academic libraries serving students of political science and journalism.-Bruce Jensen, Rohrbach Lib., Kutztown, PA (c) Copyright 2010.
