Library Journal Review

Serving as an ideal companion to Dirr's Hardy Trees and Shrubs (above), this classic manual offers thorough information on the woody trees and shrubs used in landscaping. Aside from each plant's physical description, there's also an elaboration of hardiness, growth rate, culture, diseases and insects, landscape value, cultivars, and propagation. (c) Copyright 2010. CHOICE Review

Dirr's new edition (1st ed., CH, Mar'76; rev. ed., Oct'77; 3rd ed., Jun'83; 4th ed., 1990) is bigger and better, with more than 1,600 species and some 7,900 cultivars of woody landscape plants, in genera from Abelia to Ziziphus; it includes many cultivars just making their way into nursery production and distribution to the public. The introduction is an excellent, clear review of botanical and horticultural information and terminology, including plant morphology, the use of keys for identifying woody plants, and an especially well done section on the classification and nomenclature of plants as well as the US Department of Agriculture plant hardiness map with a concise, clear discussion of hardiness factors. Throughout, many superb, clear line drawings by Bonnie Dirr, Margaret Stephan, Asta Sadauskas, and Nancy Snyder add to the book's ease of use. This easily read compendium of useful, up-to-date information is interspersed with tidbits of friendly humor. The quality and clarity of the drawings, the printing, and the binding in the soft-cover edition are superb. Comprehensive bibliography; glossary; indexes of scientific and common names. Excellent for general readers interested in woody plants and landscaping as well as professionals; a must for academic libraries with extensive horticultural and gardening collections; and a very desirable addition to any library.
