Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

Western Architecture focuses both on the technological achievements of architects and on stylistic considerations, and stresses that architecture is both a part of history and an art form in its own right.

Arranged chronologically, the book is divided into chapters on Classical, Early Christian, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Neoclassical, 19th-century revivalism, International Modernism and Post-Modernism, with each epoch's most significant architects documented and described.

A wide range of examples, both familiar buildings and many others rarely seen outside specialist books, illustrate the text, and space is given to Eastern Europe, previously neglected by architectural historians, as well as ideologically suspect styles such as Stalinist classicism.

Includes index.

CHOICE Review

Sutton begins his book by acknowledging the recent shift in architectural history away from an elitist, canonical approach toward a pluralist view anchored in social history and New Theory. Nevertheless, his approach is concerned primarily with the stylistic development of major buildings, presented at an introductory level--theory and social context are put aside, "for later." Sutton's writing moves along with the quiet force of a great river, but he is constrained by the format of the "World of Art" series wherein 433 black-and-white illustrations crowd the text on just 371 pages, and only about one of every three buildings mentioned is illustrated. Moreover, Sutton has added numerous buildings that have not been included by such predecessors as Nikolaus Pevsner and David Watkin, he has expanded the geographical boundaries of Western architecture to include more of Eastern Europe and Russia, and he brings the discussion forward into the late 1990s. As a result of these conditions, the treatment of most of the monuments is cursory, and in some instances the author is forced to include lists of buildings that represent a given stylistic or typological point. Despite these constraints, the book is a fine introduction to the subject. Glossary; acknowledgments; illustration credits. Upper-division undergraduates and up. J. Quinan; SUNY at Buffalo
