Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

Using cultural anthropology to analyze debates that reverberate throughout the human sciences, George E. Marcus and Michael M. J. Fischer look closely at cultural anthropology's past accomplishments, its current predicaments, its future direction, and the insights it has to offer other fields of study. The result is a provocative work that is important for scholars interested in a critical approach to social science, art, literature, and history, as well as anthropology. This second edition considers new challenges to the field which have arisen since the book's original publication.

Includes bibliographical references (p. 179-189) and index.

CHOICE Review

None of the succession of research programs that served anthropology for the past 70 years is now satisfying, and none has prestige or hegemony over the others. Marcus and Fischer argue that we have now an ``interpretive'' anthropology that seeks more to convey the quality of another lived, cultural experience than to present a systematized account of behavior and social organization. This interpretive anthropology consciously considers what our way of representing another cultural reality tells us about our own reality. Such an approach has led to new forms of ethnographic writing and the potential use of anthropological research at home as cogent cultural criticism. Marcus and Fischer discuss examples of experimental ethnography and try to show how to achieve an interpretive anthropology that will continue within the tradition of relativism. Moreover, this approach will convey the larger political and economic context of local cultures while using the culture concept as its fundamental construct. Notes, index, and bibliography.
