Programmers, computer scientists, and engineers need a book that delivers the essentials of how to program using Java in a more accessible, less rigorous approach. Java for Everyone provides them with a more user-friendly, graphics-intensive design that conveys complex concepts simply and effectively. It differs from other books in the market by focusing on topics such as loops and graphical interfaces, while avoiding a focus on object-orientation. The emphasis is placed on simple programs that use pre-built data structures and algorithms whenever possible. The examples and case studies explore practical applications that programmers, computer scientists, and engineers will find useful, such as processing tabular data, harvesting Web information, creating custom graphics, and building simple user interfaces.

CHOICE Review

Horstmann (San Jose State Univ.) has been writing Java books for academic curricula for a number of years, and this volume reflects both the author's expository skill as well as his dedication to developing effective pedagogical mechanisms. The work is targeted toward undergraduate students who are learning the Java language and have little or no previous programming experience. Horstmann presents the material clearly and concisely, without omitting important technical content. Like many good textbooks, this volume uses multiple constructs to help students form associations with analogous concepts, self-check their understanding, follow examples, and practice coding. Sidebars help break up the material while adding meaningful secondary material, such as historical background, social issues, or new features of the language. A particularly effective feature is the use of photographs to create visual analogues for otherwise abstract concepts. Some online ancillary material requires registration with the publisher for access. Classroom tested and carefully produced and edited, this is a strong contender for any introductory computer science course involving Java. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Lower- and upper-division undergraduates, two-year technical program students, practitioners, and general audiences. C. Vickery Queens College of CUNY
