School Library Journal Review

Gr 5-8-- Each of these books examines the life and political career of a U.S. president. All open with a brief look at the childhood and education of the man and then move to a detailed discussion of his adult life and career. There is some information about family and personal life, but the emphasis is on each man's politics and presidency. All three are clearly written, with plenty of background and historical perspective. Terms and events are explained within the text, and readers without prior knowledge of some parts of history will be able to understand the books without difficulty. The books are objective, clearly stating both the strengths and weaknesses of each man and examining how these traits affected his presidency. Analysis of each man's administration is also objective. The books contain period illustrations and photos as well as boxed off sections in the text which explain such things as Carter's religious beliefs or the importance of canals to America's early industrial development. James E. Carter is far better than Jimmy Carter (Putnam, 1977; o.p.), by Mercer, offering more analysis and commentary. Titles about recent and important presidents are common, but there are few in-depth sources about some of our lesser-known presidents for younger readers. These titles offer those readers a clear, simple look at some of the men and events that have made our history. --Mary Mueller, Rolla Junior High School, MO (c) Copyright 2010.
