Resumen: "Very few designers in this century - a century dominated by specialization and fragmentation - can be called universal, but Santiago Calatrava is one of these few. In his numerous buildings, engineering projects, sculptures, and furniture designs, this Spanish architect whose practice is based in Switzerland has developed a unique poetics of morphology that overlaps structure and movement." "The book features thirty five projects, fully documented with photographs, drawings, and sketches. Included are Calatrava's most recent works - the Milwaukee Art Museum Addition and the Orient Station in Lisbon - and his best known, from the Montjuie Tower to the Alameda Bridge." --

"The definitive study of the great Spanish architect whose soaring work is allabout openness, energy and aspiration." --Met HomeSpanish-born architect Santiago Calatrava has achieved considerable international acclaim with his breathtaking feats of architecture and engineering in the service of elegant and humanistic modern forms. This updated volume comprehensively examines this contemporary master's career, including the architect's furniture designs, sculpture, and drawings. His spectacular cultural and civic projects have secured Calatrava's place in the pantheon of world-class 21st-century architects. Among these are the Athens Olympics Sports Complex; the Tenerife Concert Hall in the Spanish Canary Islands; the Valencia Science Museum, Planetarium, and Opera House, and the much-anticipated World Trade Center Transportation Hub. This newest edition introduces Calatrava's latest triumphs, including the expressive Turning Torso tower in Sweden and the Chicago Tower, the tallest skyscraper in the US when built. A catalogue raisonne, detailed biography, and bibliography complete this comprehensive monograph.

Includes bibliographical references (p. 236-237).

CHOICE Review

Tzonis (architectural theory, Univ. of Technology of Delft) offers an excellent introduction to the work of Spanish architect and engineer Calatrava (b. 1951). Beginning in the 1980s, Calatrava established an international reputation based on a series of bridge designs; his unorthodox approach demonstrated the existence of a postmodern concept of structural engineering. The scope of his work has expanded to include transportation and communication facilities, exhibition pavilions, and cultural facilities throughout Europe and North America, combining novel technical solutions to structural problems with a sculptor's sensitivity to the aesthetic properties of form. Tzonis has written extensively about contemporary architecture, and his text makes the special logic of Calatrava's work accessible to nonspecialists. Tzonis provides a selected bibliography, but the literature devoted to Calatrava is growing so rapidly that any bibliography will soon be outdated. What will be of enduring value are the illustrations. This handsome book is profusely illustrated and includes sketches by Calatrava, line diagrams, and stunning color photographs of the executed work. Paolo Rosselli's photography is among the best this reviewer has seen in recent years. General readers; undergraduate and graduate students; professionals. D. P. Doordan; University of Notre Dame
