CHOICE Review

The amount of research being done on technologically mediated communication (TMC) is growing apace with TMC itself. New devices are constantly unveiled in the marketplace, and these provide new avenues of communication and new opportunities to study technological advances. Focusing on the most ubiquitous form of TMC worldwide--wireless mobile communications--Castells (sociology, USC) et al. use "social research to answer the questions surrounding the transformation of human communication" resulting from wireless technologies. In its examination of the literature, the book is a wonderful resource of information about research, findings, user trends, cultural impacts, and opportunities for social and economic development involving wireless mobile technology. Taking a pragmatic and practical approach, the authors also call for more research on the actual practice of using these technologies, "rather than projecting dreams or fears" of their impact on society. Despite the scope and breadth of the book, the ever-changing nature of the TMC makes it almost impossible to provide finite answers to the numerous questions the authors pose. That the book raises more questions than it answers is one of its strengths. The impact of TMC will evolve as society evolves, providing interested parties (and affected populations) with opportunities to experience/study the phenomenon anew. Summing Up: Highly recommended.
