This fascinating introduction to classical art and architecture is the first book to investigate the way classical buildings are put together as formal structures. It researches the generative rules, the poetics of composition that classical architecture shares with classical music, poetry, and drama, and is enriched by a variety of examples and an extensive analysis of compositional rules. The 205 line drawings make up a discourse of their own, a pictorial text that serves as an introductory theory of composition or basic design aid.
Drawing from Vitruvius, the poetics of Aristotle, the theories of classical architecture, music, and poetry since the Renaissance, and the poetics of the Russian formalists, the authors present classical architecture as a coherent system of architectural thinking that is capable of producing a tragic humanistic discourse, a public art with critical, moral, and philosophical meaning.

CHOICE Review
This book requires from the reader a genuine appreciation of architectural design and aesthetics. It is not easy reading for anyone who does not love the meaning of architectural rules and structure. It also requires a reader willing to study the details of plans and elevations, because a large portion of the book consists of drawings taken from numerous publications in the history of architecture. The comparisons and analyses are conducted in a clear and brilliant manner using illuminating parallels to music. Key terms such as taxis, genera, or symmetry are analyzed in Part 1. This is followed by ``Anthology of Classical Works,'' and Part 3 deals with the answers to the questions, ``Why Classicism?'' Any serious student of classical architectural traditions will find this book to be a requirement as well as a great stimulus for thought. The quality of the illustrations is generally very good; the index of terms as well as the bibliography make it a useful reference book. Recommended for college and university architectural collections.-R. Winkes, Brown UniversityNotas de autor provistas por Syndetics
