The first woman to be awarded the distinguished Pritzker Architecture Prize, in 2004, Zaha Hadid is internationally known for projects that have literally "shifted the geometry of buildings." The Iraqi-born, London-based architect has collaborated with the Guggenheim on several projects leading up to this comprehensive retrospective, including the design for the museum's exhibition The Great Utopia in 1992. Each of Hadid's dynamic and innovative works builds on over 30 years of experimentation and research in the interrelated fields of urbanism, architecture and design. True to Hadid's interdisciplinary approach to architecture, all mediums will be covered here.

"Published on the occasion of the exhibition Zaha Hadid, organized by Germano Celant and Mónica Ramírez-Montagut, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, June 3-October 25, 2006"--T.p. verso.

CHOICE Review

The Guggenheim Museum catalog on Hadid's work contains four essays, written by Germano Celant, Joseph Giovannini, Detlef Mertens, and Patrick Schumacher that, despite considerable overlap regarding the origins of Hadid's work in Russian Constructivist and Suprematist art, do illuminate her project from the viewpoints of art and architectural history, biography, technique, and personal vision. Ivan Boyarsky's interview with Hadid is followed by 120 pages of full-color images of the architect's paintings, drawings, models, and built works from 1976 to 2006. These, in turn, are followed by Monica Ramirez-Montagut's "Conceptual Chronology of Zaha Hadid's Major Exhibitions." The catalog text--notable for its Hadidian curving margins--concludes with a chronologically arranged sub-catalog of project credits, a compilation that reveals Hadid's explosive success since the mid-1990s. Summing Up: Highly recommended. General readers; lower-division undergraduates through professionals. J. Quinan University at Buffalo, SUNY
