In this state-of-the-art volume, leading international scholars and clinicians provide a comprehensive and cross-disciplinary overview of how rigorous research on bereavement translates into practice. They identify new developments and controversies in the field, relating new theories to concepts from attachment and emotion theory. The effects of societal change and of national and international events on personal and public mourning are examined, along with other areas of interest to practitioners, such as cultural competence in helping diverse clients cope with grief and bereavement. New analyses employ longitudinal data sets to more clearly trace patterns of adjustment, trajectories of grieving over time, and the use of coping resources.

The contributors also explore emerging research on the consequences of losing a loved one; "disenfranchised" grieving, and other critical areas. Researchers and practitioners will find useful discussions of innovations in research design and quantitative and qualitative measurement, and the efficacy of intervention programs. Other chapters explore the current controversy over including complicated grief in the next edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.

CHOICE Review

Knowing how to help people--be they children, grandparents, or disaster survivors--grieve a loved one's death is a challenge. Joining Handbook of Bereavement Research, also ed. by Stroebe et al. (CH, Sep'01, 39-0611) and Bereavement in Late Life, by Stroebe and Robert Hansson (CH, Mar'07, 44-4149), this third title in the trilogy synthesizes scientific knowledge about the phenomena and manifestations of bereavement using theoretical and life-span perspectives. Experts have tested assumptions, used new research designs, and attempted to integrate theory and research. This book covers perspectives of grief and grieving, social and practice concerns, patterns and consequences of grief, and intervention programs. In examining the trajectories of grief, contributors look at caregiving and bereavement, postbereavement growth of the self, religion, and reactions to romantic rejection. Among the well-known contributors are Shirley Murphy, who explores the loss of a child, and Paul Rosenblatt, who examines grief and culture. Health care providers, counselors, scholars, researchers, and students interested in bereavement will find the research findings and intervention perspectives useful. Future research needs to examine multiple perspectives to understand how resilience is determined by multiple risk and protective factors that have cumulative effects. Summing Up: Recommended.
