An extensive general Introduction places the Novelas in the context of Cervantes's life and work; provides basic information about their content, composition, internal ordering, publication, and critical reception, gives detailed consideration to the contemporary literary-theoretical issues implicit in the title, and outlines and contributes to the key critical debates on their variety, unity, exemplarity,and supposed 'hidden mystery'. After a series of chapters on the individual stories, the volume concludes with two survey essays devoted, respectively, to the understanding of eutrapelia implicit in the Novelas, andto the dynamics of the character pairing that is one of their salient features. Detailed plot summaries of each of the stories, and a Guide to Further Reading are supplied as appendices.

This very worthy companion to Novelas ejemplares opens with an introduction by Boyd, who treats the life of Cervantes, his writings in general, and the background, variety, ordering, and common features of the 12 novellas that make up the work. Fittingly commenting on the novelistic and exemplary elements of the texts, the editor sees Cervantes as skeptical not about essential truths in themselves but about people's capacity to apprehend and act on them. The first essay, also by Boyd, deals with the "exemplary" prologue to the novellas, and the 13 essays that follow are written by a distinguished group of international scholars, many of whom have written extensively on the Novelas ejemplares. The collection includes studies of the individual novellas, questions of exemplarity, characterization, and entertainment value. Each essayist foregrounds one specific type of negotiation: with tradition and literary convention, with social protocol, with philosophical or psychological issues, with authority, etc. The result is a solid survey of the novellas and of the approaches that have marked recent criticism. The writing quality is consistently high, and the audience should include both students and specialists. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through faculty. E. H.
