CHOICE Review

Where do budding scholars turn when their mentors are unavailable? Whom should graduate students approach when a methodological or statistical consultant is nowhere to be found? The answer to these questions may well be this tightly written book. Kline (Concordia Univ., Canada) designed this book as a reference for those dealing with the all-too-common knowledge or procedural gaps that affect advanced students and newly minted PhDs. His goal is to help these researchers create and conduct programmatic research on a defined topic while also making them aware of the strengths and drawbacks of various research designs. Well written and for the most part succinct, the book is not for the uninitiated: Kline's to-the-point style provides depth for veterans of methods and statistics courses, but not for beginners, however earnest they may be. The book's ten chapters examine basic issues and research concepts, design and analysis, statistics, effect size, measurement issues, practical (i.e., appropriately straightforward) data analysis, writing, and styles of presentations. The last two are especially important, since writing and speaking can make (or break) many a would-be scholarly career. Mentors should recommend this book to advisees, and librarians should acquire it. Summing Up: Recommended. Graduate students, researchers, faculty. D. S. Dunn Moravian College
