Resumen: "This book will change the way we understand cities. It provides readers with not only an introduction to cities and urbanism in the postmodern world but also overturns many common assumptions about urban structure. Dear's analysis combines concepts of postmodernism, space and the urban to trace the genesis of a postmodern urban condition. He provides an understanding of the intellectual, moral, and political consequences of postmodernism and an evaluation of the role of space, and place in contemporary social theory and philosophy." --

CHOICE Review

Dear's study is one of the most significant theoretical additions to the urban studies literature of the past decade. The author is a renowned urban geographer and director of USC's Southern California Studies Center, and both roles position him ideally to write about the rise of postmodernist urban theory and its application to Los Angeles, the prototypical postmodern metropolis. Dear provides a clear understanding of the moral, intellectual, and political dimensions of postmodernism, and he brilliantly explains and evaluates the vital role of space and place in the contemporary urban condition. The central group of his 15 chapters offers a fascinating empirical reading of changing urban landscapes in LA and other cities, all enriched by the author's stunning photos. The final chapters treat the consequences of the postmodernist transformation of urban studies and Dear's vision of a 21st century increasingly dominated by global megacities. His greatest contribution in this work may well be his lucid and accessible introduction to this difficult subject--something that social scientists have sorely lacked until now. In sum, his book is an instant classic that belongs in every college and research library in the English-speaking world. Upper-division undergraduates and above. P. O. Muller; University of Miami
