Resumen: In his latest book Jonathan Barnett explores the new realities and opportunities for the design of the metropolitan region. Architect, teacher, and urban designer, Barnett cites specific examples from around the country demonstrating how bypassed areas in the old city can become real estate opportunities, how new types of zoning can facilitate development at metropolitan edges without destroying the landscape, and how metropolitan planning can repair our environment and communities. The book describes ways to write effective urban and suburban planning guidelines; methods for making highways and transportation systems further overall planning goals; designs that make conservation areas and public places create more value for development; techniques for promoting successful historic districts; and much more, including the basic elements of city design and a national agenda for action. There are 152 plans, diagrams, and photographs integrated with the text --

CHOICE Review

Barnett (architecture, City College of New York), an urban design consultant, offers a lively analysis of the contemporary metropolis that is studded with insights and recommendations for improving the layout and functioning of cities and suburbs. Writing for a general audience and supported by nicely illustrated and well-chosen examples, he deftly explains not only how urban development created various land-use problems but also how many can be corrected through better design and plan implementation. Building up to the presentation of a bold "national agenda for action," Barnett persuasively assembles his case in ten chapters that focus on metropolitan fragmentation; the rise of edge cities; the prevention and cure of suburban sprawl; community creation; central city/suburban ring divisions; entrepreneurial centers; bypassed frontier areas; restoration of older neighborhoods; changing planning philosophies; and the elements of city design. Profusely illustrated with plans, maps, drawings, and photographs, this is a particularly attractive book at a reasonable price. Highly recommended. All levels. P. O. Muller; University of Miami
