CHOICE Review

As a second-generation electrical contractor, Kay brings extensive practical experience to this book. The founder of a technical nonprofit educational organization which researches and teaches techniques of historic building conservation, she has provided extensive information on a subject seldom written on, the relationship of building systems and historic preservation. Her book is believed to be the first multidisciplinary book evaluating existing or new installations of new mechanical/electrical systems cost effectively in pre-1940 commercial, institutional, and residential properties. It begins with an in-depth discussion of building conservation followed by discussion of specific aspects. It is loaded with diagrammatic how-to drawings on the best way to achieve cost-effective construction while retaining historic features. Included are practical details for introducing elements such as: electrical power, lighting; heating, air-conditioning; plumbing; life safety systems; and security systems. This book is comprehensive, yet easy reading. Highly recommended for academic libraries supporting programs in architecture, interior design, engineering, and/or historic preservation; for practicing architects/designers, and those interested in the possibilities of retaining the architectural heritage of buildings.-R. P. Meden, Marymount University
