CHOICE Review

A companion piece to A Grammar of Contemporary English (London, 1972), A Communicative Grammar of English (London, 1975), and A Concise Grammar of English (1973) by the same authors, A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language (CGEL) will surely be remembered as the major descriptive grammar of the English language in our time. CGEL is the culmination of the authors' joint work, which has resulted in a grammar that is considerably larger and richer than A Grammar of Contemporary English. CGEL incorporates the authors' own research on grammatical structure with the research of scholars worldwide who have contributed to the description of English. The title well suits the book. It is the most comprehensive grammar of English since Otto Jespersen's A Modern English Grammar (Heidelberg, 1909-49). There is an excellent appendix that illustrates the rules of punctuation. This scholarly book is written in a clear style, easily read by the layperson. It is well bound, has an excellent bibliography, and a superb index. It is highly recommended for undergraduate and public libraries, and is essential for graduate school libraries. Most libraries should have two copies: one that is kept on reserve for reference and one that could be checked out.-M.D. Linn, University of Minnesota-Duluth
