Authoritative, accessible, and completely up to date, The Oxford Dictionary of Synonyms and Antonyms is an invaluable guide for anyone wanting to build their vocabulary and improve their writing skills. Over 140,000 alternative and opposite words are given with the closest, most frequently used synonyms listed first; in addition thousands of real-life examples of usage from the Oxford English Corpus enable the reader to pinpoint the relevant word quickly and easily. Also included are some useful appendices designed to improve your knowledge of the language: a new Wordfinder section offers a selection of thematic lists - from chemical elements and clothing to phobias and flowers - and a Common Confusables supplement explains the crucial differences between similar words that are often mixed up.

CHOICE Review

A new edition in Oxford's paperback reference series, one among many trusted reference sources, this dictionary is suitable for students and general readers, word enthusiasts, and those interested in word games such as crossword puzzles. This English-language dictionary offers a plethora (140,000) of synonyms and antonyms. Each entry contains headwords arranged alphabetically ("abandon" to "zoom") with their parts of speech and other elements, e.g., "core" synonyms, opposites, words most often used in a particular region of the world, and level or style of usage (formal or informal). Most of the synonyms are Standard English; words mainly British, or used primarily in a particular geographical location, are given regional labels. Two appendixes list commonly confused words ("affect"/"effect," "their"/"there"). A new word-finder section is featured with thematic categories: animals, chemical elements, clothing, food and drink, phobias, and plants. This portable dictionary of almost 500 pages is rich in content and easy to use. It compares well with similar British and US publications and will be particularly useful to students and general readers. Summing Up: Recommended. All levels. M.
