Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

The Dictionary of Public Policy and Administration offers definitions of all the key terms, concepts, processes and practices of contemporary public policy and administration. Included are brief biographies of major scholars and influential practitioners, summaries of major rulings by the U.S. Supreme Court, overviews of significant laws, descriptions of important government agencies, and explanations of historical trends and governing doctrines. The Dictionary is designed to be the single most useful tool that a student or practitioner of public administration could have--the book to keep at their side while they are reading other textbooks in the field.

CHOICE Review

Shafritz's DPPA "seeks to capture and codify the living language of public affairs." Its 1,600 entries define terms and phrases in public policy and administration. Begun as a revision of Shafritz's The Facts on File Dictionary of Public Administration (CH, Jul'86), it acquired a new title because so many new terms were added and old ones dropped. The new dictionary has numerous cross-references and includes biographies, public laws, and summaries of Supreme Court cases that relate to public policy and administration. Topics include Leonard Dupee White, 1891-1958, who wrote the first US public administration text in 1926; the Pendleton Act of 1883 that introduced the merit concept into federal employment; and Brown v. Board of Education. Some entries are brief, while others ("public administration") cover two pages. Slang, such as "turkey farm" (a government office that does little work and has little responsibility) is also included. Other terms ("loose cannon," "glass ceiling") seem unnecessary. This work is useful for noninitiates. ^BSumming Up: Recommended. General readers; undergraduates; graduate students. L. M. Stuart Johns Hopkins University
