CHOICE Review

The author is critical of the multiple schools of family therapy as well as gurus who focus on symptom relief. Subjective success stories and charisma are no substitutes for accountability and long-term results. L'Abate (Georgia State University, Atlanta) has developed an eclectic system of family therapy drawing on theorists from many schools. He also developed systematic homework assignments (included in the appendix), intended for use by minimally prepared professionals from various fields. L'Abate sees family therapy as coaching, information exchange, and practice: change behavior first (as sex therapists do) and then verify the results. L'Abate attempts to integrate impressionism and scientism while keeping the essence of both. The book has an author and subject index, references (more than 38 references to L'Abate's writings), and appendixes. Well documented, integrative, and thought provoking, the book would make a useful addition to family counseling and psychology collections in undergraduate libraries.-L. Potter, formerly Ramapo College of New Jersey
