Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:
The Facts on File Dictionary of Allusions provides a comprehensive guide to allusions in the English language. In approximately 4,000 entries, this new resource explores well-known events, places, people, and phenomena whose names have acquired linguistic significance, conveying a particular message beyond a mere reference to the objects referred to. The entries are drawn from a wide range of sources, including Shakespeare and the Bible; Greek, Roman, and Norse mythology; texts from literature through the ages; historical events; popular culture; and film and television. Individual entries contain pronunciation guides, definitions, examples, information on derived forms, and more. An index, bibliography, and cross-references round out this accessible dictionary.
Includes bibliographical references and index.

CHOICE Review
This dictionary has several commendable features: broad scope (real and fictional persons, literature and popular culture, historical events and landmarks, concepts, etc.); definitions preceding origin information; see references to the form of personal names used (e.g., "Arnold, Benedict see Benedict Arnold"); accessible examples (from classic and contemporary writings, popular culture, and those constructed by the editors); and a thematic rather than a traditional index. It is intended to build on the earlier Facts On File Dictionary of Classical and Biblical Allusions (CBA), ed. by M. H. Manser (CH, Mar'04, 41-3781). Unfortunately, it has significant overlap with both that work and with the Facts On File Dictionary of Cultural and Historical Allusions (CHA) by S. Cole and A. H. Lass (CH, May'01, 38-4757). In a look at the entries for "A," 74 percent of the terms listed or cross-referenced were in either CBA (57 percent overlap) or CHA (17 percent overlap). For "Q," 8 of 17 entries or cross-references were duplicated in either CBA or CHA. Libraries need not acquire this volume if they own CHA; CBA; Brewer's Dictionary of Modern Phrase and Fable, ed. by J. Ayto and I. Crofton (2nd ed., 2006); and either John Ayto's Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable (17th ed., CH, Jul'07, 44-5963) or The Oxford Dictionary of Allusions, ed. by A. Delahunty, S. Dignen, and F. Stock (CH, Nov'01, 39-1279). Summing Up: Optional. Lower-level undergraduates and general readers. E. M. Bentsen Baylor University LibrariesNotas de autor provistas por Syndetics
