Library Journal Review

Special education programs continue to expand rapidly, which makes the need for information on this topic greater than ever. This third edition has been thoroughly updated, particularly in the areas of legislation, guidelines, new tests, and curricula. Drawing on their backgrounds in psychology and experiences as authors and editors of books, journals, and psychological tests, editors Reynolds and Fletcher-Janzen collect thousands of A-to-Z articles (each is approximately one page long) by a vast array of specialists drawn mainly (but not exclusively) from the United States. Important issues covered range from theory to practice, from school psychology to neuropsychology, from biographies to teaching approaches. This critical reference includes entries addressing the full gamut of special-education research, albeit with an American orientation, a factor that may scare off readers not interested in a U.S. interpretation of these areas. The cross references are not always sufficient--readers may want to check out other entries on their own, even if not directed to do so. Bottom Line Despite the downsides, this is a valuable resource for parents, professionals, and other laypeople with an interest in the education of youths with special needs. However, unless there is a specific need for up-to-date print information, libraries might not find it as valuable as it might have been in the past, when online materials were not so readily available.--Sara Marcus, Queens Coll., Flushing, NY (c) Copyright 2010. CHOICE Review

The subtitle says it all--well, almost all. This reference work is useful in education, health care, and community agencies, for teachers, parents, and care providers of all kinds. The signed entries include print and electronic references, followed by boldface titles of related entries (see also without the title), sometimes written by the same author(s). Writing is both literate and accessible, making this a very useful resource in defining and explaining the many issues, conditions, terms, and concepts that surround human development and behavior, especially those that are generally outside wide normal limits. This work also offers short biographies of notable psychologists, philosophers, researchers, physicians, educators, and others whose works have contributed to the education and care of all children--not just those with disabilities. Among the categories of information are therapies, measurement instruments, legislation, standards, drugs, diseases, technologies, personality characteristics, government programs, and research design--any aspect of society that touches and influences the lives of persons with disabilities. The entry "Disability Etiquette" is a wonderful guide to help both the able-bodied and those with disabilities interact with less awkwardness. The changes in special education and care of those with special needs are reflected throughout this revision of a long-valued reference source (the previous edition appeared in 1999). Summing Up: Highly recommended. All levels. L. L. Scarth Mount Mercy College
