In today's increasingly complex workplace, many employers rely on technicians to perform jobs that other professionals once handled. In the fields of medicine, manufacturing, education, and law, technicians and paraprofessionals have become vital parts of the labor force. These careers, popular for their good pay and relatively short training cycles, are among some of the most dynamic in today's job market. This fully revised and updated two-volume set covers more than 110 technician careers and features interviews with professionals already at work in the field. Each of the lively and engaging articles contains an in-depth look at a particular tech career. New and revised coverage includes: brand-new coverage of careers in education, drafting, and orthotics; photographs of professionals at work; new and revised sidebars and bibliographies; DOT and NOC (Canada) classification numbers for all careers, in addition to GOE and O*NET-SOC numbers. Jobs covered include: Avionics Technicians; Computer Programmers; Food Technologists; Petroleum Technicians; Robotics Technicians; and Veterinary Technicians.

Includes bibliographical references and index.

School Library Journal Review

Gr 9 Up--Every high school offering career guidance should have this valuable resource. It provides extremely thorough and understandable information about 114 alphabetically arranged technician-level jobs that require intensive training, but not a bachelor's or master's degree. Each chapter describes one career and begins with a thumbnail overview, followed by a personalized introduction to a person who holds that position. This is followed by information on the main tasks and the personal skills and talents necessary for success in the field. Practical sections then list the steps to obtaining this type of position, job opportunities, advancement prospects, pay, and overall outlook for the job. Within each chapter, areas of particular interest, helpful professional jargon, and "FYI" quick facts are presented in sidebars and insets. Finally, contact information is supplied for relevant professional organizations. The two-columns-per-page format, with occasional black-and-white photos of technicians at work, is punctuated with enough shaded and "In-depth" segments to maintain visual interest, yet the overall impression created by the work is one of professionalism. This rich reference will clarify and expand on the information provided in classes and on the Internet.--Mary R. Hofmann, Rivera Middle School, Merced, CA (c) Copyright 2010. Booklist Review

This outstanding set updates salary, job outlook, bibliographic, contact, and professional-organization information found in previous editions. New chapters cover "drafters, medical technologists, orthotic and prosthetic technicians, and teacher aides." Well over 100 careers are described n entries that average seven or eight pages. Students may be surprised at the very high median salaries of some careers requiring a bachelor's degree or less: air-traffic controllers, dental hygienists, computer network specialists, computer programmers, etc. Each entry has 11 user-friendly sections including an introduction, an opening sidebar, job requirements, educational requirements, salary ranges, and job outlook. Many entries include a black-and-white photograph. Sidebars have been added or revised. The concluding section of each entry has a list of contact information for professional organizations and a bibliography. Volume 2 indexes chapter titles by the DOT, GOE, NOC, and O*NET SOC systems. Entries often differ significantly in content from those found in the same publisher's outstanding Encyclopedia of Careers and Vocational Guidance0 (13th ed., 2005), which covers more than 740 careers in 5 volumes. The print is larger, entries are sometimes significantly longer and more thorough, and bibliographies are included. Moreover, entries in the new set add human interest by focusing on a real practitioner's experiences in several sections. Exploring Tech Careers0 is highly recommended for high-school, public, and academic libraries. In a personable style, they shed great light on a wealth of career options. --Craig Bunch Copyright 2007 Booklist
