CHOICE Review

The American Psychological Association convened the Working Group on Psychotropic Medications for Children and Adolescents to provide readers with an excellent, well-organized, and timely book pertaining to psychiatric care of children and adolescents. This panel of nationally recognized experts (from child psychology, psychiatry, and pediatrics) thoroughly evaluates current evidenced-based research related to the efficacy of psychopharmacological and psychotherapeutic treatment of youth with psychiatric and/or behavioral problems. Childhood disorders of focus include attention deficit/hyperactivity; conduct, mood, anxiety, and obsessive compulsive disorders; schizophrenia; autism spectrum; anorexia and bulimia nervosa; and elimination difficulties. Tables throughout the book clearly summarize key information pertaining to the effectiveness of psychotherapeutic, psychopharmacological, and combined treatment for each disorder. In addition, experts address significant issues of risk-benefit and (when data are available) the impact of gender and cultural differences. Importantly, authors highlight repeatedly the need for future research in psychiatric treatment in children. Another helpful feature of the book is its extensive reference list, which serves as a source for evaluated research. This well-written book is a much-needed resource. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Academicians, practitioners, and graduate students in mental health disciplines. M. C. Matteis Regis College
