CHOICE Review

McAdams, Josselson, and Lieblich bring together an impressive array of international scholars to articulate how the narratives "we" tell create the "selves" we carry. Although this may seem to be a bit of an oxymoron--that narratives create self rather than self creating narratives--the contributors do an excellent job of making their case. Starting with the introduction, the editors and contributors spell out a rationale for linking narrative to self. Indeed, the first paragraph hearkens back to William James and connects the "I" and the "me"--the self-as-knower and the self-as-known to self-as-teller and self-as-tale-told. This analogy works well and places the language of narrative into a context that most researchers and teachers of psychology will recognize. Chapter 2 addresses identity within marginalized groups (in particular gay, lesbian, and Jewish) and is especially informative. The third of three sections addresses issues of stability and growth in identity, bringing a cross-cultural perspective to the mix and beginning a dialogue on the relationship between personal ideology (and values) and identity. ^BSumming Up: Highly recommended.
