Library Journal Review

Cataloging and technical services expert Intner (professor emeriti, GSLIS, Simmons Coll.; Metadata and Its Impact on Libraries), with the assistance of Johnson (Univ. of Minnesota Libs.; editor, Library Resources & Technical Services and Technicalities: Information Forum for the Technical Services Practitioner), has written a practical, well-thought-out handbook for managing a technical services department. Although it is primarily aimed at novice managers, it is just as useful for current department heads, library administrators, technical services staff, and faculty and library school students. Building on the thorough understanding of library technical services laid out in 2002's Introduction to Technical Services, 7th ed., by G. Edward Evan, Intner, and Jean Weihs, this volume provides guidance on administrative organization, developing "effective goals, objectives, and action strategies," hiring, training, supervising and evaluating staff, budgeting and finance, working with vendors, understanding metadata, evaluating the department, and establishing good communication skills. Each chapter includes a list of further reading. Highly recommended for professional and library school collections.--Susan E. Ketcham, Long Island Univ., Brentwood, NY (c) Copyright 2010. Booklist Review

This book in the ALA Fundamentals series is a practical guide for use in technical services departments. It is full of practical chapters on topics ranging from organizing to evaluating the department. Each chapter includes a summary, notes, and a list of recommended reading. Among the fundamentals that are discussed in the book are planning the department's work flow, evaluating vendor performance, preparing a budget, and participating in cooperative digital collection-development projects. This should be required reading for new managers of technical services departments and is a great resource for those thinking of a career in technical services, or interested in knowing more about technical services departments and what they do.--Donaldson, Christy Copyright 2008 Booklist
