Library Journal Review

Since the publication of the first edition in 2005, white-collar and corporate crimes have captured the world's attention and wreaked havoc on both financial markets and political systems. This edition boasts close to 500 entries, including 80 new subjects and revisions to outdated entries from the first version. Volume 1 opens with a chronology of white-collar crime running from the 7th century BCE to 2013. The clear, authoritative essays that follow cover a wide range of offenses, including organized crime, drug trafficking, money laundering, bribery, and government corruption. Entries are by academics and independent scholars and range in length from a few paragraphs to several pages each, followed by "see also" references and suggestions for further reading. The second volume contains a glossary, a resource guide, an appendix of relevant excerpts from key legislation, and a thorough index. Given the intricacies of many notable cases, this set excels at conveying the complexities that often lead to punishable white-collar offenses. It highlights background information such as the botched governmental oversight that indirectly led to the BP Deepwater Horizon disaster. Another interesting entry examines the layers of personal and professional deceit that allowed Bernard Madoff to execute his now infamous Ponzi scheme. VERDICT This encyclopedia is not designed for use as a legal reference; its value lies in its fascinating and evenhanded documentation of the most egregious examples of corporate, political, and individual transgression throughout history. Recommended for high school students and adults with an interest in white-collar and corporate crime.-Jennifer Michaelson, Cleveland (c) Copyright 2013. CHOICE Review

Since publication of the first edition (CH, Feb'05, 42-3168), much has happened in the world of white collar and corporate crime. Martha Stewart completed her sentence, Bernard Madoff ruined countless lives and is spending his remaining years behind bars, a Madoff son committed suicide, and numerous crimes have been committed in this field. This second edition provides a wealth of information about current and historical issues, focused on "the introductory knowledge that students can utilize." An introduction discusses the idea of white collar crime, invoking Edwin Sutherland, and Gill Geis. Arranged in A-Z format, the set offers numerous tools to assist readers, including an annotated chronology spanning approximately the seventh century to 2013, a glossary, a resource guide (print sources and websites), and an appendix (eight law summaries). To assist in locating articles, a reader's guide provides over a dozen headings for the entries, including "criminology and criminal justice," "health care fraud," and "scams and swindles." Several articles from the previous edition were removed and about 80 new signed articles added. This resource provides an understanding of the events, people, and places that define white collar and corporate crime. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower-division undergraduates through graduate students; general readers. K. Evans Indiana State University

Booklist Review

This two-volume encyclopedia has been updated and refined to reflect the changing landscape of white-collar and corporate crime. Since the publication of the first edition, nine years ago, several major crises have arisen in the U.S. that have brought to light new players and issues in the field of white-collar crime. Several entries have been removed from the encyclopedia, and more than 80 new entries have been added on recent figures (such as Bernie Madoff and Eliot Spitzer) and for crimes and scandals (including Ponzi schemes and WikiLeaks). The chronology, in volume 1, has also been updated to include current-headline events, such as the arrest of James Whitey Bulger and recent repercussions from Hurricane Katrina. The set's Reader's Guide, originally listing 17 categories, has been reorganized into 15 categories that include the new topics of War Profiteering and Work-Related Crimes. Most entries are brief and contain introductory information on the topic. For more complex topics, such as Bank fraud or Mortgage-backed securities, several pages are devoted to the topic's history, issues, and scandals. Each entry ends with see also references directing readers to related entries and a Further Readings section with websites and articles with more information on the topic. There are a few black-and-white photographs throughout. Volume 2 includes a glossary; a Resource Guide that lists books, journals, magazines, newspapers, and websites; a Law Summaries section, which has been updated to include the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2010; and a detailed index, with cross-referencing.This set covers a wide range of topics with entries focused on providing introductory information, making it a useful starting point for researchers. Recommended as a great addition to public, high-school, and undergraduate libraries.--Casey, Kaela Copyright 2010 Booklist
