CHOICE Review

A significant pioneering effort in the analysis of the socioeconomic and political effects arising from the 19th-century emancipation of slaves in Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic. This collection contains the major papers presented at the 1981 Conference on Problems of Transition from Slavery to Free Labor in the Caribbean. Several papers focus on the effects of international trade policies and late 19th-century technological advancements in sugar production on changing socioeconomic relationships between planters and workers on the three islands. Among the contributors are Herbert Klein, whose earlier works on slavery include Slavery in the Americas (CH, Nov '67), Franklin Knight, whose Slave Society in Cuba during the Nineteenth Century (CH, May '71) has become a standard source, and Francisco Lopez Segrera, a Cuban scholar, whose polemic on the plantation economy and social classes in colonial Cuba proved the least illuminating of the 13 essays. The social scientist specializing in modern Caribbean development will find this work stimulating and filled with suggestions for further research. Several tables and detailed endnotes add to its usefulness. Upper-division undergraduate level and above.-J.A. Gagliano, Loyola University of Chicago
