Library Journal Review

First published in 1933, this robust sixth edition covering 2006 back to 10,000 B.C.E. now includes more than 8500 entries (some 1000 of them new) and a bevy of new illustrations. While authors Steven Anzovin (The Star Wars Debate), Janet Podell (Rock Music in America), and the late Kane (Facts About the Presidents) have number-tagged entries, organization is alphabetical, first by subject heading, then by specific "firsts." The entries are entirely factual, excluding analysis, and they are followed by a series of five indexes allowing readers to locate "firsts" by subject, year, day, personal name, and geographic location. Perfect for trivia buffs or scholars seeking facts; a highly recommended staple for public libraries and American history collections. [Also available in electronic format.] (c) Copyright 2010. CHOICE Review

This sixth edition replaces and updates the fifth (CH, Jul'98, 35-5960) by adding over 1,000 new entries and grouping the entries into 16 chapters. They include "Arts and Entertainment," "Daily Life," "Nature and Environment," "Religion," and "Transportation." Many new entries fall into the areas of technology (first podcast from space), gender (first major sports facility named for a woman), and laws (first state law requiring cats to be neutered). The 100 small illustrations add to the attractiveness of the volume but provide little new information. The reorganized subject index will prove useful. This is without doubt a quality volume. However, at a time when many students are relying almost exclusively on electronic resources and prices of both print and electronic materials are rising faster than budgets, spending $185 for this new edition will be difficult for most libraries. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower-/upper-level undergraduates and general readers. J. E. Sheets Baylor University

Booklist Review

Originally published in 1933, this classic reference source was rejected by 11 other publishers until Halsey W. Wilson was persuaded to publish it because of a growing demand from reference librarians who had been shown the manuscript. Compiled by the indefatigable researcher Joseph Nathan Kane, Famous First Facts may have secured its own first fact--the first print reference volume to become the basis for a popular radio program, which was hosted by the author in 1938-1939. This sixth edition contains about 7,500 entries, including more than 1,000 new and many updated ones. Arranged under 16 broad topical headings such as ""Education,"" ""Daily Life,"" and ""Science and Technology,"" the text is easily accessible from several indexes, which comprise 600 pages! This edition also offers some new features, including interesting sidebars and photographs, that enhance its visual appeal. Besides serving as an essential ready-reference source, the book is also fun to read out loud to colleagues--when was bubble gum first manufactured in the U.S.? When was the spray can introduced? The editors   have admirably maintained the standards set by Kane, who died in 2002 at the age of 103. Since the previous edition was published a decade ago, public and academic libraries should consider this updated version an essential purchase.--Altschiller, Donald Copyright 2007 Booklist
