Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

Violence in the home is one of the most damaging and widespread of social problems. It is an issue that cuts across all socioeconomic, racial, ethnic, gender and age boundaries. It takes many forms, including emotional, physical and sexual abuse as well as neglect. This text reviews the theoretical explanations of family violence and then links theory to practice. It looks at the systems and institutions that interact with families, which are mandated to provide protection and services, and explores the debates surrounding family violence and public policy. In addition, Karel Kurst-Swanger explores the role of power in abusive relationships and considers the short- and long-term consequences of abuse.

Includes bibliographical references (p. 277-304) and index.

CHOICE Review

Kurst-Swanger (public justice, SUNY Oswego) and Petcosky have developed an excellent resource for both academics and practitioners that gives readers a broad range of knowledge about each type of family violence in this field. Each area (child abuse, domestic violence, elder abuse, etc.) is first put into historical perspective, both legally and socially. Developing the text in this manner makes it a "nice read" and provides readers with a contemporary framework of understanding. Information is provided on the interpersonal dynamics of both the abuser and the victim, making this a practical resource for individuals working in these areas. Each chapter also offers excellent resources, such as Web sites for additional information and a section on indicators for assessment. This book is equally appropriate as a course text for both undergraduate and graduate levels, and as a practical guide for workers in the field. The authors should be applauded for putting together such a rich resource. ^BSumming Up: Highly recommended. Most collections. D. A. Mathews Salisbury University
