Keeping pace with the ever-changing world of self-help, the revised and expanded edition of this indispensable reference helps consumers and professionals distinguish high-quality self-help resources from those that are misleading, inaccurate, or even harmful. The number of resources reviewed has increased by more than 60%, to over 1,000 self-help books, autobiographies, and popular films. Ratings now embody the collective wisdom of more than 3,000 mental health professionals. Supplementing their eight national studies, the authors also describe and evaluate hundreds of Internet sites and provide valuable listings of self-help and support groups. The volume is organized around 36 frequently encountered clinical problems and life challenges, with entirely new chapters covering posttraumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, youth violence, borderline personality disorder, bipolar disorder, and suicide. The concluding chapter delineates 11 key strategies for selecting an effective self-help resource.

CHOICE Review
Norcross and his associates compile results from five national surveys in which professional psychologists evaluated mental health resources, including self-help books, autobiographies, and movies. The guide includes evaluations of mental health Web sites that have been recommended by at least one of the authors. Twenty-eight chapters, each devoted to a single topic, range from addictive disorders to women's issues but include communication, weight management, and men's issues. In each chapter the authors rate resources on a scale of one to five stars and use a dagger for really inferior sources. Items warranting positive ratings have annotations; most receiving negative ratings do not. Some Web sites are dead, as one might expect, but no online counterpart of this guide is available to rectify the problem. The first edition (John W. Santrock et al's The Authoritative Guide to Self-Help Books, CH, Dec'94) received a mixed review because of a 15 percent survey response rate; this edition has an average response rate of about 25 percent. The writing style is professional, but avoids jargon. Recommended for libraries supporting programs in counseling and psychology. K. Condic; Oakland UniversityNotas de autor provistas por Syndetics
