CHOICE Review

Neither Newton nor Rudestam is a stranger to writing books that draw on their respective fields of sociology and psychology. Previously the pair from Fielding Graduate University penned Surviving Your Dissertation: A Comprehensive Guide to Content and Process (3rd ed., 2007). Now they offer statistical survival tips that answer questions gathered from students and colleagues. They are not afraid to provide advice, along with examples that address the tough dilemmas that social scientists encounter in statistics. This book is valuable for its interpretation of alternative approaches to traditional statistical inferences. Twelve chapters tackle nearly 100 questions, including such classics as how to deal with missing values. The second edition is noticeably updated and clearly replaces the earlier 1999 publication. Included are a new chapter, more illustrations, and even new topics. The book starts off with detailed content pages. Just opening it gives a clear road map with key points in italics and key terms in boldface. The links to statistical websites are gems. This textbook supplement is ideal for advanced students, practitioners, and faculty in the social sciences. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through researchers/faculty.
