Library Journal Review

For the elderly, falls are a common problem and can cause significant mortality and morbidity. In hospitals and nursing facilities, falls are a leading cause of adverse events including serious injury and even death. In three sections, Tideiksaar, Ph.D. and president of FallPrevent, covers causes, consequences, and preventive strategies with the goal of educating caregivers and administrators in health-care facilities. Included in this update are chapters on interventions, organizational requirements and evidence-based practice, and new guidelines and forms for helping hospital and nursing facility professionals develop fall-prevention programs. The etiology of falling, aging and musculoskeletal body changes, medical and pharmacologic causes of falling, fall risk assessment, restraint usage, bed safety, side rails, wheelchairs, canes, safety booties, fall alarms, and environmental and psychological factors associated with falling are among the issues and devices treated in this exhaustive, clinical treatise on the nature of falls and their prevention. VERDICT This comprehensive text belongs in all health sciences libraries as a consummate reference on patient safety standards related to falls, and it is highly recommended for consumer health collections, as both institutional and home fall situations are covered.-James Swanton, Harlem Hosp.
