Library Journal Review

Starred Review. Love e-journals or hate them, the one thing a library cannot afford to do is ignore them. To help deal with the deluge of electronic periodicals, leading expert Curtis (director, research services, Univ. of Nevada-Reno Libs., and coauthor with Scheschy of Developing and Managing Electronic Journal Collections) has written an indispensable reference for every serials and acquisitions librarian. Indeed, every library professional would benefit from its expertise, for every aspect of libraries is affected by the shift from paper to online access. An overview of the evolution of electronic journals is followed by sections on shifting resources to accommodate e-journals, developing a collection, licensing and authentication, ordering and receiving, supporting users, and analyzing e-journal use. Chapters are written from a very practical, hands-on viewpoint, with checklists and examples, and points are thoroughly detailed in a current and comprehensive manner. However, Curtis does not ignore the theoretical aspect of e-journals, providing bibliographies of suggested readings for each topic. Appendixes include sample collection development policies and methods for compiling web-based lists of e-journals. An essential purchase for all libraries.--Margaret Sylvia, Blume Lib., St. Mary's Univ., San Antonio (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. School Library Journal Review

Academic and public librarians seeking a comprehensive guide to constructing, managing, and maintaining collections of electronic journals need look no further. This book includes background information about e-journals, behaviors of the users of electronic resources, "ins" and "outs" of changing from print to electronic resources, collection-development issues, licensing and authentication of e-journals, purchasing and organizing collections, supporting the use of electronic collections, and statistical analysis of electronic-resource use and service. Additionally, several appendixes offer sample collection policies, advice on standardizing and organizing journal titles on Web pages, and information on the Aggregator-Neutral Record and how to use a spreadsheet to construct Web lists of e-journals. Efficiently organized chapters begin with an overview and culminate with a list of references and additional information resources. Clearly labeled headings, subheadings, and bulleted lists make the content highly accessible. Concise writing, supported with extensive research, lends even more to the appeal of this title, and effective use of graphics supports the content nicely. As libraries develop electronic collections of journals, assistance will be needed. This resource contains must-know information and will be appreciated for its comprehensiveness and expertise.-Beth Jones, Shelby County High School, Shelbyville, KY (c) Copyright 2010. Booklist Review

Considering the extraordinary changes in serials from the mid-1990s to midway in this decade, a publication like this is very welcome. It is a practical guide for working librarians that will help them navigate the e-journal jungle. It was originally conceived to be another edition of the author's 2000 publication, Developing and Managing Electronic Journal Collections. However, so much has changed that it is a completely different book, with a different title. There are chapters on understanding e-journals and the users of online information, shifting library resources, developing an e-journal collection, licensing, ordering, maintaining access channels, and supporting users and analyzing their usage. The clear, up-to-date writing is interspersed with ample illustrations and examples. Appendixes include E-journal Collection Policies, Standardizing Titles for Web Lists, E-journal Web Lists by Subject, and The Aggregator-Neutral Record. Very useful for serials and collection-management librarians. --Jack O'Gorman Copyright 2005 Booklist
