CHOICE Review

Fifteen years after The Whole Library Handbook first appeared, this fourth edition retains its characteristics as a unique encyclopedic collection of factual data covering all aspects of the library world, together with readable excerpts from recent books and articles on "librariana." Gathered together are such gems as Daniel Veach's piece on collecting poetry, Robert Maxwell on the evolution of MARC records and cooperative cataloging, Mike Wessells on religion at the reference desk, and Danelle Hall's article, "Mansell Revisited." They are a representative sample from the handbook's central section, "Operations." Dozens more are scattered throughout the book, enlivening what is becoming a principal librarian's reader. Eberhart asserts that 97 percent of WLH4 is new or substantially revised, and repeats his warning that librarians need not discard earlier editions since they contain useful essays on topics not covered in the present edition. One caveat is that a lengthy "Library Education" section fails to mention the existence of associate-level degree programs in library technology. Perhaps this is one of those topics awaiting coverage in a future edition. For academic collections and library professionals, WLH4 is an important supplement to the Bowker Annual. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower- and upper-level undergraduates; professionals/practitioners. J. W. Barnes Georgia Perimeter College
