School Library Journal Review

Gr 9 Up-Short film clips and lush cinematography show ecosystems around the world rainforests, mountains, deserts, fresh water, cities, and oceans among them. Homeostasis, how an organism (or system) responds to stress to protect itself, is emphasized. The production points out that change (evolution) is ongoing and natural, and discusses the positive and negative impact of humans on the ecosystems. For example, DDT is noted as having saved millions of lives by killing malaria bearing mosquitoes while at the same time weakening the eggs of some species of birds. This balanced view is noteworthy. Theories about causes of global warming, both natural and man-made, and its ultimate result are considered. Efforts to save endangered species are examined, including preservation of habitat and cloning endangered species. Although the narration is adequate, the narrator sounds like a teacher lecturing a class. The graphics are serviceable. A full script and a selected bibliography are included. Ecosystems on Earth provides a solid, balanced view of the world's ecosystems as we enter the 21st century. While most useful for high school students, it also could be used with upper middle school viewers.-Mike Brown, Greenbelt Middle School, MD (c) Copyright 2010.
