Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

The fourth edition of Environmental Hazards continues to blend physical and social sciences to provide a thoroughly balanced, contemporary introduction to hazards analysis and mitigation strategies. It covers all the major rapid-onset events, whether natural, human or technological in origin which directly threaten humans and what they value.
Environmental Hazards provides a lucid comprehensive introduction to both the theory and practice of hazards and their mitigation, drawing on interdisciplinary insights. It is essential reading for students of geography, environmental science, earth science and geology.

Includes bibliographical references (p. [272]-299) and index.

CHOICE Review

Smith concentrates on rapid-onset events that directly threaten human life on a wide scale. Part 1 is an overview: awareness and typology of hazard, dimensions of disaster, risk assessment and perception, and adjustment to hazard (sharing or reducing loss). Part 2 details the experience of hazard: earthquakes, volcanoes, mass movement (of rock, land, snow), severe storms, temperature extremes, and wildfires, floods, and droughts. Thorough consideration is also given to other costs destruction of property, disruption, dislocation. Social, economic, legal, and political issues are introduced. With reference to categories, scale, and cost of harm, some of the semantic arguments are labored and unsatisfying, but the book presents a quite useful introduction to the field. Technological (human-made) hazards are addressed briefly and an attempt is made to integrate them into the conceptual framework of the book; except for a disconcerting preoccupation with nuclear power plants, the comparisons are helpful. Intended as a text on environmental hazards for undergraduate and graduate students in geography, environmental science, and related disciplines, the book would also be very interesting to politicians, public administrators, development and aid agencies, and other general readers. Recommended. D. W. Larson; University of Regina
