Library catalogs are doorways to accessing the information treasures available within. To provide excellent service for all who wish to enter, especially children, this classic cataloging reference has provided the key for almost two decades. Since 1998, when the third edition of "Cataloging Correctly for Kids" was published, library cataloging has experienced explosive changes in practices, technological tools, scope of services, and available materials. The new fourth edition, again published in conjunction with the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS), addresses those changes and continues to make catalog data accessible to children while following consistent and universal standards. Starting with updated "Guidelines for Standardized Cataloging of Children's Materials," this definitive edition calls on the foremost experts in cataloging to: explain the unique ways children search so catalog information is accessible to them; identify ways to incorporate AACR-2 and MARC standards; show how to use standard heading forms including LC's children's headings; and illuminate the challenges of cataloging nonprint materials and automating the process.

Children's service librarians, school media specialists, and all public, school, and academic librarians responsible for children's cataloging will find a comprehensive, authoritative one-stop guide to better serving the youngest library users at the catalog.

Includes bibliographical references (p. 119-123) and index.

Library Journal Review

Starred Review. Since 1989, this volume has been educating librarians on how to adapt cataloging and classification standards originally created for adult materials to resources for their younger patrons. The clearly written chapters, contributed by cataloging experts, discuss the standards, rules, and tools needed by catalogers and guide them in how to prepare records that are both appropriate and standardized for kidsâÇÖ materials. Catalogers must remember that we can make things easier for our young patrons by using natural language, changing the interface design, using children subject headings yet still stay within the accepted standards and rules as presented in the updated Guidelines for Standardized Cataloging of Children Materials. In this revision of the 1998 third edition, new chapters include Cataloging Correctly Using AACR2 and MARC21, Copy Cataloging Correctly, and Using LC Children Headings for Original MARC Cataloging: Why and How. Although the obvious audience is school and public libraries, this edition has a chapter entitled Cataloging for Kids in the Academic Library. The updated chapters on automation and vendors as well as a current bibliography are welcome. Highly recommended for children librarians, cataloging students and their instructors, and catalogers.--Susan E. Ketcham, Long Island Univ.-Southampton Coll. Lib., NY (c) Copyright 2010. Booklist Review

This fifth edition includes updates on bibliographic description and subject access, a new chapter on cataloging for non-English-speaking and preliterate children, and guidance on when and how to move to RDA. Chapters provide guidance on how and why to catalog for children, copy or original cataloging, the importance of authority control, the cataloging of nonbook materials, and more. Those considering which subject-heading schema to use will benefit from chapters on the Library of Congress Children's Subject Headings, Sears List of Subject Headings, and Dewey decimal classification. Those just starting out, or turning to automation, will benefit from chapters on automation and vendors of cataloging for children's materials. The book is appropriate for anyone working with materials for children and young adults.--Marcus, Sara Copyright 2010 Booklist
