Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

Institutions, individuals, and issues are the key ingredients of the process known as public policy making. Yet it is their interaction that makes the public policy making process so challenging to appreciate. Public Policy Making: Process and Principles explains the topic in terms of the policy making framework and dynamic behavior in the context of continuous pressures, conflicting values, and competing political objectives. By providing a rich, understandable explanation of the policy making framework, the author helps students identify the numerous pressure points of the policy making process and understand policy outcomes. This revised edition is rich with real world examples. Each chapter includes stimulating questions for further thought as well as suggested readings.

Includes bibliographical references (p. 143-158) and index.

CHOICE Review

The third edition of this concise introduction to the policymaking process has been thoroughly updated. Recent events such as Hurricane Katrina, financial market breakdown, economic recession, wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the passage of health care reform legislation are used to frame discussion about policy change. Gerston (San Jose State Univ.) also provides examples from a wide range of policy arenas, including budget, education, environment, foreign policy, immigration, technology, and transportation. However, this book is largely organized around the stages framework that views policy change as proceeding sequentially through stages that include agenda setting, policy development and adoption, implementation, and evaluation. Gerston departs from other authors by devoting an extra chapter to the triggering mechanisms that lead to policy change and concluding with a chapter emphasizing the "constant churn" of policy making. The brevity of the book is both a strength and weakness. The text is very readable, but has only a limited number of tables and graphs. Therefore, this book should be paired with a more policy-oriented book for a more dynamic understanding of contemporary US public policy issues. Each chapter includes discussion questions and suggested readings. Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-division undergraduate collections. M. L. Godwin University of La Verne
