Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

This book has a dual objective: first to introduce the reader to some of the most important and widespread environmental issues of the day; and second to illustrate the vital role played by mathematical models in investigating these issues. The subjects covered are ground water contamination, air pollution, and hazardous materials emergencies. These issues are presented in their full real-world context and are used to develop important classical mathematical themes. The emphasis throughout is on fundamental principles and concepts, not on achieving technical mastery of state-of-the-art models.

Includes bibliographical references and index.

CHOICE Review

Written with great clarity and enthusiasm by an applied mathematician who has worked on real-world problems as an environmental consultant, Mathematical Modeling is a pedagogical attempt to introduce, at an elementary level, the general concepts, principles, and methods of environmental modeling. The text illustrates the use of mathematics and the diversity of its applications to the environment; it provides extensive coverage of real-world problems that will be of tremendous interest to college-level mathematics instructors offering lower-division interdisciplinary applied mathematical modeling courses. A background in elementary mathematics and general education is all that is required for the first part of the book, but some knowledge of calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations--as well as more sophisticated modeling capabilities--is necessary for the more advanced second part. Some classical and contemporary techniques are used for problems that lead to partial differential equation models. The interplay between physical reasoning and mathematical modeling, and the use of computational techniques to solve and analyze pertinent modeling problems, is encouraged. Recommended for seniors, beginning graduate students, and environmental modelers and faculty. D. E. Bentil; University of Vermont
