Library Journal Review

Melgar Valero paints a beautiful landscape of saints who have been canonized by the Catholic Church throughout the ages. Drawing on the ecclesiastical calendar year, he features each day's designated saint plus others who are noteworthy. The text traces the history of the canonization tradition, starting with the early practice of canonizing martyrs. Later, as culture and politics shook the foundations of the Church's dogma, religious leaders redefined sainthood standards to include monks and hermits. Modern-day saints are not necessarily monks or martyrs but rather ordinary people such as doctors, politicians, and housewives. Melgar Valero clearly outlines each saint's biographical background but fails to explain why he or she was chosen for sainthood. Moreover, he wrongly assumes that readers have an expansive knowledge of Catholicism, so that in many cases they are left guessing about the religion. Nevertheless, this book offers an interesting description of sainthood's history in a beautiful, eye-catching layout. Melgar Valero delicately intertwines the biographies with colorful renditions of some of the saints by classic artists such as Rubens, El Greco, and Rafael. Recommended for seminary libraries and large Catholic/Christian libraries and bookstores. Lillian L. McAnally, Orlando, FL (c) Copyright 2010.
